Dear Friends …
It is with great pleasure that I announce the re-opening of St. John’s, Maindee, for in-person worship, and attach our schedule for Holy Week and Easter! Welcome back.
As we entered Lent, I told myself that I would make every effort not to go through a second Easter with online-only worship and now, with Covid vaccinations rolling out so efficiently in the UK, and so many of us already having had our first dose, I am confident that we are now in a better position to resume worship in person. This does not, of course, mean that any public activity is entirely risk free, and our worship will continue to be adapted to fit all required risk assessments and regulations. But we will be together, and I am looking forward to that very much.
Please will you find, below, the Holy Week & Easter schedule I’ve mentioned above. I’ll look forward to seeing many of you there. However, for those still unable to attend, please know that we will continue streaming on YouTube. We want to leave no one behind.
Palm Sunday: 28th March 2021, 10:45 & 19:00.
10:45 – In-person services resume at St. John’s with the Blessing of the Palms.
19:00 – Our annual Palm Sunday Choral Service is virtual this year; join us on
our YouTube channel: https://saintjohns.stream .
Maundy Thursday: 1st April 2021, 19:00.
We commemorate Christ’s Last Supper with his disciples and the foot-washing. We hear the haunting story of Christ’s agony at Gethsemane, then sit vigil with Christ. “Could you not watch one hour?”
Good Friday: 2nd April 2021, 14:00.
The Veneration of the Cross: as we hear once again the story of the crucifixion, we take part in prayers of mourning, yet thank Christ for his world-changing sacrifice.
Easter Sunday: 4th April 2021, 05:30 & 10:45.
The Great Vigil of Easter (05:30) is perhaps the most beautiful service of the Christian calendar — begun in literal darkness before sunrise, and ended in glorious light. We light the first light of Easter when we light the Paschal Candle and bring it into the Church. We hear the story of salvation from scripture, from the fall of humanity to Christ’s glorious resurrection. We renew our baptismal vows, as we then celebrate the first Mass of Easter. If you’ve never come before, please join us. It’s very early … but it’s well worth every moment.
